Gatto was designed in 1960 by the brothers Achille and Pier Giacomo Castiglioni for the Italian lamp manufacturer Flos. Its diffused light makes for a comfortable room atmosphere and mood. The internal lamp structure is made of white powder-coated steel, the diffuser is a cocoon cover made of synthetic resin fibre. This is, combined with a transparent protective coat, sprayed onto the structure and resembles a cocoon, or the pods of different insects' larvae, especially that of the caterpillar before it emerges as a butterfly.
